Ripple USD (RLUSD)

RIPPLE USD (RLUSD)

A regulated, U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin issued for payments, settlement, trading and institutional on-chain finance.

WHAT IS A STABLECOIN?

A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to keep a stable value by linking its price to an external reference, most commonly a national currency such as the U.S. dollar. A dollar-backed stablecoin aims to remain close to one U.S. dollar per token. Unlike assets whose prices are determined entirely by market demand, a fiat-backed stablecoin relies on reserve assets and a redemption process intended to support its price.

Stablecoins combine a familiar unit of account with blockchain settlement. They can move around the clock, cross borders without waiting for normal banking hours, interact with digital-asset markets and be programmed into payment or treasury applications. They are important because they give businesses and users a less volatile way to hold and transfer value onchain. However, “stable” does not mean risk-free: reliability still depends on the quality and custody of the reserves, regulatory oversight, operational security, liquidity and the ability to redeem tokens.

WHAT IS RIPPLE USD?

Ripple USD (RLUSD) is Ripple’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin. It is designed to maintain a value of one U.S. dollar and is redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars through eligible channels. Ripple states that RLUSD is fully backed by segregated reserves consisting of cash, U.S. Treasury securities and cash equivalents, with reserve information supported by regular third-party attestations.

RLUSD is issued natively on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum, connecting two different blockchain ecosystems. It is not the same asset as XRP. XRP is the native, market-priced asset of the XRP Ledger and is used for transaction fees and as a bridge asset. RLUSD is an issued token whose purpose is to provide dollar-denominated stability for payments and settlement.

WHEN WAS RLUSD CREATED?

Ripple announced its plan for a U.S. dollar stablecoin in 2024. Following regulatory approval from the New York Department of Financial Services, public RLUSD availability began on 17 December 2024. The launch placed RLUSD on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum from the beginning, allowing institutions, exchanges and developers to work with the token across established blockchain environments.

WHO USES RLUSD?

RLUSD is designed primarily for financial and commercial activity rather than price speculation. Its users and potential users include payment service providers, remittance companies, centralized exchanges, market makers, institutional trading desks, treasury teams, merchants and blockchain developers. Typical uses include near-real-time cross-border settlement, exchange trading pairs, merchant and vendor payouts, fiat on- and off-ramps, treasury transfers and collateral or settlement within digital-asset markets.

Ripple’s official RLUSD material highlights firms such as Keyrock, OpenPayd, OKX US and LMAX Group in connection with institutional liquidity, payments, trading and custody. Availability varies by jurisdiction and platform, so businesses and individuals must use supported providers and follow the rules that apply in their location.

WHY STABLECOINS ARE IMPORTANT

Stablecoins form a practical bridge between traditional money and blockchain networks. Their steady reference value makes prices, invoices and settlements easier to understand than when every payment is denominated in a volatile cryptocurrency. They can also reduce the number of banking intermediaries involved in a transfer, support continuous settlement outside banking hours and give digital markets a liquid dollar-denominated trading asset.

For institutions, the most useful stablecoins combine reliable reserves, clear redemption rights, compliance controls, broad liquidity and transparent reporting. These characteristics can help payment firms and financial institutions use blockchain infrastructure without accepting the same price volatility associated with assets such as XRP, bitcoin or ether.

HOW RLUSD SUPPORTS THE XRP LEDGER

RLUSD gives the XRP Ledger a native dollar-denominated settlement asset. This can attract users who want XRPL’s fast settlement and low transaction costs but need their payment value to remain stable in U.S. dollar terms. It can support remittances, business payouts, tokenized assets and applications that require predictable accounting.

A credible stablecoin can also deepen activity in the XRP Ledger’s decentralized exchange and automated market maker by providing additional trading pairs and a stable quote asset. Easier movement between dollars, RLUSD, XRP and other issued assets can improve onchain liquidity and make it simpler for developers to build payment, trading and treasury products on XRPL.

RLUSD and XRP are complementary rather than interchangeable. RLUSD offers price stability, while XRP remains the XRP Ledger’s native asset, pays network transaction costs and can bridge liquidity between assets. More RLUSD activity can increase use of XRPL infrastructure and its built-in financial tools, but it does not guarantee an increase in the market price of XRP.
